Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma unveiled plans to establish a Film City and a Film Institute in Shillong during the first Hello Meghalaya Music Awards. Held on World Music Day at the SRTG Ground in Polo, the event highlighted the government's push to foster a robust creative ecosystem for local artists and content creators.
Addressing the audience, the Chief Minister drew on his background as a musician to advocate for better infrastructure, including upgraded recording facilities and improved music education. He argued that these initiatives are vital for the state's cultural identity. Regarding the importance of recognizing artistic efforts, Sangma said, "Describing music awards as investments rather than expenses, the chief minister said such initiatives can play a transformative role in recognising talent and inspiring future generations of artists."
The government also highlighted the progress of Hello Meghalaya, its state-run OTT platform, which has surpassed 500,000 downloads. This platform remains a key tool for providing financial support and distribution for local creators. The awards ceremony itself celebrated a diverse range of genres, including folk, gospel, rock, and hip-hop, while featuring performances from local acts like the Tarari Kids Choir and the Bending Waves Band.
