Mawlyndep Village Transforms Into Rural Model With 50 Crore Investment

Shillong: Mawlyndep village in the Ri-Bhoi district is being hailed as a model of rural transformation after securing more than 50 crore in funding under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana. Adopted by Rajya Sabha member WR Kharlukhi, the village has seen this massive investment distributed across various government schemes to improve infrastructure and local livelihoods.

A significant highlight of this development is the inauguration of the Mawlyndep Community Biofloc Fish Farming Unit. This enterprise serves as a key livelihood project designed to create jobs and boost local income. Despite facing delays due to cyclonic storm damage, the facility is now operational with the capacity to produce 20 tonnes of fish per cycle. With two cycles planned annually, officials estimate the project will generate nearly 1.4 crore in gross revenue each year.

The project will eventually include integrated cold storage and processing facilities to support local producers. During the inauguration, Kharlukhi handed over operational inputs to 15 self-help groups. He also opened a new Livelihood Service Centre, two water storage tanks, a school building, and a guest house funded by various state and central schemes.

Beyond immediate community facilities, the initiative is focusing on long-term connectivity. Kharlukhi laid foundation stones for road construction and paving projects in Mawlyndep, Umbir, and Umniuh Khwan. Officials attribute this progress to a convergence model that combined resources from departments including Public Health Engineering, Fisheries, and Tourism, as well as support from the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society and private sector CSR contributions.
