Shillong: The Mawklot Farmer Producer Company Limited (MFPC Ltd) has signed an agreement with 11 fashion designer trainees in the South West Khasi Hills to produce custom tote bags. This partnership connects rural youth and women in border areas directly to the market, offering them a sustainable income stream.
The agreement follows a training program led by the company with assistance from the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society. To support the production, the government provided sewing machines to the trainees at a ceremony held at Photkroh Community Hall.
MFPC Ltd will provide the fabric and two exclusive bag designs tailored for tourists and local daily use. The company plans to oversee the marketing and sales of the finished products while paying the trainees for their stitching services. Representatives noted that the project is designed to help the trainees grow their own businesses, stating, "The project serves as a forward linkage to help trainees establish their own tailoring and fashion enterprises."
The initiative successfully launched despite regional hurdles like poor road conditions and unstable electricity. To celebrate the effort, participants also held a tree planting event at the community hall to mark World Environment Day.
