Manipur Displaced Families Hoist Black Flags to Protest Independence Day

Imphal: Thousands of displaced people living in relief camps across Manipur marked Independence Day with protest. They raised black flags to signal their anger. Demonstrations occurred at camps in Sajiwa, Sawombung, and Akampat. The displaced residents remain stuck in camps more than three years after ethnic violence erupted in May 2023.

Protesters argue that celebrating the national holiday feels hollow while they lack stable livelihoods or security. They have been forced from their homes for years with no permanent solution in sight. The black flags represent their ongoing struggle for a dignified return to their communities. They demand immediate government action on rehabilitation and restoration of normalcy.

The protesters expressed deep frustration regarding current national campaigns. "We have no meaning for 'Har Ghar Tiranga' as we have no 'ghar' now to celebrate," the group stated. The demonstration highlights the severe lack of progress in returning these families to their homes and rebuilding their lives.
