Imphal: Manipur marked its 80th Independence Day on August 15 with large-scale celebrations held across the state. At the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh hoisted the National Flag. He led a ceremonial march-past featuring 23 contingents. Khemchand condemned recent unrest in Kangpokpi and urged citizens to prioritize mutual trust and peace to ensure future stability.
The Chief Minister highlighted the Viksit Bharat vision, aimed at achieving national self-reliance by 2047. He confirmed that 35 displaced residents received financial aid for chronic illnesses, while 2.4 lakh beneficiaries collected Rs 91 crore across 17 social schemes. His administration recently delivered 477 vehicles to the Manipur Police and launched the ERSS-112 service. Additionally, he noted the establishment of a new Special NIA Court in Thoubal and the creation of a Police Museum.
Gallantry medals went to five Special Commando personnel. Other officials earned recognition for implementing the UNLF Peace Agreement. In the waste management category, Jiribam Municipal Council took the top spot among 27 urban bodies.
Kangpokpi district hosted a dual celebration. Deputy Commissioner Hemant Kumar oversaw the main event at the DC Mini Secretariat Complex, featuring a parade led by SDPO L. Lhunminlal Khongsai. Kumar reported the resettlement of 10,000 displaced people and promoted local black rice cultivation. Simultaneously, Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen led a 60-kilometer Tiranga Bike Rally. Over 300 riders participated, traveling from the district headquarters toward Gamgiphai and the Keithelmanbi Military Colony. Students also carried an 80-foot Tricolour through the streets.
In Senapati, Deputy Commissioner Dharun Kumar S presided over ceremonies at the Local Ground. Addressing the five major tribes of the district, he stated, "Five tribes, one Senapati. Many traditions, one shared future. Many voices, one national song. And above all, one India." He announced expansions for Eklavya Model Residential Schools and outlined plans for a new Super Speciality Hospital and Medical College. The district honored World Youth Cup athlete Potovei Chapao, who scored seven goals in the competition, with a commendation certificate.
