Manipur Child Rights Commission Enrolls Girl Found Begging into School

Imphal: The Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights recently moved a seven-year-old girl into formal education after an intervention aimed at getting her off the streets. The commission acted following a request from the Social Upliftment Association, an organization that manages the SMILE scheme for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Authorities discovered the child while she was begging near the Kwairamband Keithel Overbridge alongside an elderly woman named Hamida Khatun. After officials produced the girl before the Commission, they directed the Zonal Education Officer for Imphal East Zone-II to secure her admission into a local government school.

To support the child’s long-term needs, the Commission instructed the District Child Protection Unit in Imphal East to help obtain a birth certificate and an Aadhaar card. These documents will allow her to access essential welfare benefits. Officials also ordered a social investigation to qualify the child for sponsorship support through the Mission Vatsalya program.

The child is now under a formal protection framework. The Commission confirmed that she has begun her schooling and remains eligible for ongoing support services.
