Imphal: Manipur BJP MLA L Susindro Meitei slammed the state government on Sunday, July 26. He warned he might quit the party if leadership fails to fix deteriorating administrative standards. Meitei represents the Khurai constituency and served as a minister under former Chief Minister N Biren Singh. He now claims decision-making is trapped within a tiny circle under current Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh.
Elected representatives have been shut out. They only participate when senior ministers demand it. "The government is run by a few ministers, and we only interact when they call for a discussion on certain issues," Meitei said. The legislator claims state performance plummeted immediately after President’s Rule ended this February.
This public dissent reflects wider instability. The BJP, once known for ironclad discipline, is cracking as Assembly elections approach. Former minister L. Susindro Singh (Yaima) and Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh have also expressed concerns about the party ignoring public expectations. Ethnic violence has plagued the state since May 2023. Thousands remain displaced. Economic blockades and sporadic fighting continue despite government claims of peace.
Political observers note a widening communication gap between N. Biren Singh and Yumnam Khemchand Singh. Former BJP candidate Johnson Elangbam recently left the party to become a vocal critic. While no formal rebellion exists, many MLAs now stay quiet to avoid defending the government. Past elections show that public resentment often wipes out sitting incumbents, a fate the BJP now fears as internal pressures mount.
