Imphal: Multiple LPG cylinder explosions leveled five shops at Tampi junction in Manipur's Chandel district on Monday evening, July 27. The fire started in a row of shops built on property owned by ST Chunggam in Tampi village. The situation turned dire as gas cylinders detonated in quick succession, driving the flames into nearby businesses. The structures were ruined.
First responders faced significant hurdles. Personnel from the Chakpikarong Police Station and 43 Assam Rifles hurried to the scene alongside local residents. A fire crew from Sugnu, located 12 kilometers away, failed to reach the site before the fire took hold. Assistant Commandant Ravinder Kumar oversaw the containment efforts, but the shops were already lost.
No injuries or deaths occurred during the blaze. Officials have not determined the exact cause, and investigators are looking into every possibility. "The possibility of foul play has not been ruled out and will be examined as part of the probe," authorities stated. This disaster revived calls for a dedicated fire station in the Chakpikarong subdivision. Groups like the Anallon Chiefs' Association continue to push for better emergency coverage, though the request remains stalled.
