Imphal: Manipur Fire Services is scaling up operations to combat surging disaster risks and urban congestion. Director L. Nabachandra confirmed plans to build seven new stations in Porompat, Lilong, Yairipok, Saikul, Litan, Khumbong, and Heirok. The state has proposed 26 additional stations to bolster the existing network of 22 sites, which includes recent additions at Nambol, Tadubi, Lamlai, Sekmai, and Noney.
Resources are stretched thin. The department currently manages 103 fire tenders, but faces a persistent staffing deficit. Only 400 personnel work against a sanctioned limit of 534, leaving 134 vacancies. To bridge this gap, 118 recruits are finishing basic training in Bhubaneswar. Nabachandra noted, "The department has sought Central Government assistance to procure drones for emergency assessment, surveillance and operations in inaccessible areas."
Urban growth and narrow streets hamper traditional firefighting. Crews now use compact Yodha vehicles to navigate tight spaces. Beyond hardware, the agency is installing GPS trackers at critical hubs like hospitals and the airport to sync with police communications. These upgrades align with the Disaster Management Act of 2005, evolving the force into a multi-hazard team.
The department completed 397 fire calls and 45 emergency responses during the 2025-26 period, protecting assets valued at Rs. 81.34 crore. Officials are pushing fire audits and safety certifications under the National Building Code to minimize risks in high-rise buildings and schools. Citizens should report emergencies by calling 101, 112, or 8415925200.
