Kohima: Longsa village kicked off its first Environment and Cleanliness Drive this Saturday. Held under the theme Think Clean & Live Green, the event drew residents together for a massive cleanup and planting session. The Longsa Government Employees Union and the Longsa Village Council teamed up to lead the effort.
Volunteers planted 92 saplings across the village. The Union plans to hold these social work sessions every two months to keep the momentum going. They also want every household to plant an ornamental tree to help spruce up the area.
Wokha Town Council deputy chairperson Nzano P. Kikon served as the special guest. She told the crowd that cleanliness does not stop at the front door. Kikon pushed for strict waste segregation and warned against plastic use. She specifically addressed the dwindling water supply at Etsichukha spring, noting that human neglect is the primary culprit behind such losses. She said, "Cleanliness extended beyond homes to the surrounding environment."
Kikon also reminded the locals that digging a hole is only the first step. They must water and monitor the new trees to ensure they actually survive. Proper disposal of medical and sanitary waste remains a top priority to avoid health hazards in the community.
