Kohima: The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Longleng, Thungchanbemo Tungoe, has issued a formal directive ordering the immediate removal of all unauthorized encroachments across Longleng Town. The order targets shopkeepers, roadside vendors, and business owners who have occupied public footpaths, walkways, roadsides, and drains.
Authorities identified widespread issues including the display of goods, storage of construction materials, and the presence of temporary structures on municipal land. These obstructions have created significant challenges for pedestrians, blocked emergency services, and hindered traffic flow. Under the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, the administration maintains that these public areas must remain clear for the benefit of the community.
The mandate strictly prohibits using public space to display merchandise, setting up stalls on walkways, or blocking shop entrances. Officials stated the move is "in the interest of public convenience, pedestrian safety, smooth traffic movement, cleanliness, public health, and orderly urban management."
The order is effective immediately. Those who fail to comply face severe consequences, including the confiscation of property, the seizure of goods, the imposition of financial penalties, and potential legal action. The local government will also recover any costs associated with the removal of these structures from the violators themselves.
