Imphal: A delegation from the Liangmai Naga Council met with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the state secretariat on June 14 to discuss community welfare. The delegation, led by President Timothy Wijunamai, requested the construction of an 8-kilometer road to improve local connectivity. Addressing the request, the Chief Minister stated, "The government has taken note of the proposal and will examine it with due diligence and seriousness to assess its feasibility for implementation."

This high-level meeting follows the abduction and murder of six Liangmai Naga men, whose remains were discovered on June 10 in Kangpokpi district. The victims were among 18 civilians kidnapped on May 13 from Leilon Vaiphei village by suspected Kuki militants. While 12 captives were later released, these six men were held until their bodies were recovered by a joint security force operation involving the Manipur Police, CRPF, and Assam Rifles.

The recovery of the remains has sparked significant public unrest and triggered protests throughout the region. In response to the killings, the United Naga Council organized a 24-hour shutdown, while women from the Liangmai community initiated an indefinite economic blockade on National Highway-2. Demonstrators are also demanding that the government revoke the Suspension of Operations agreement with the Kuki National Front-President, the group accused of the attack.

The investigation into the murders has been transferred to the National Investigation Agency for a comprehensive forensic analysis. Tensions remain high as various advocacy groups and organizations continue to protest the incident and call for accountability from state leadership.
