Shillong: A technical error on the Meghalaya Transport Department website is preventing residents from accessing essential motor vehicle regulations in English. When users attempt to view the Central Motor Vehicles Rules of 1989 or the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, they are redirected to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways portal.
Although the pages load in English, a recurring glitch causes the content to automatically switch to Hindi within seconds. Attempts to adjust the language settings have proven ineffective, leaving users unable to read vital information regarding driver licensing, vehicle registration, penalties, and road safety protocols.
This malfunction poses significant challenges in Meghalaya, where English serves as the primary language for official government communication. Because Hindi is not widely understood throughout the state, the issue has sparked concerns regarding digital inclusivity and the practical ability of citizens to comply with legal requirements.
Critics of the current system point out that legal documents affecting daily road usage must remain consistently available in English to ensure transparency. The incident highlights ongoing difficulties for residents of non-Hindi-speaking states when navigating centralized government portals for regulatory compliance.
