Guwahati: The Bhumi Adhikar Joutha Sangram Samiti is demanding the immediate release of land rights activist Aditya Chandra Rabha. Police arrested Rabha on Thursday evening. He faces charges involving financial irregularities at a cooperative small savings bank.
The committee claims the case is fake. They argue the charges aim to crush the ongoing land rights movement in Assam. Gobinda Rabha, Krishna Gogoi, Bidisha Barman, and Subrata Talukdar signed the statement accusing the state of targeting grassroots leadership. The group alleges the two complainants have no ties to the bank and are mere political supporters of the BJP.
The committee maintains that state officials want to sow discord among indigenous groups. They view the arrest as a direct assault on democratic protest. "Threatened by this movement, the government has jailed a grassroots leader like Aditya Chandra Rabha on false pretexts," the committee said. They are now pushing for the administration to drop the case and end the harassment of activists fighting for land ownership.
