Imphal: Hundreds of Kuki community members marched through Kangpokpi district on Tuesday, July 14, demanding the release of three local leaders. The protest, organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), began at Nute Kailhang and ended at Brig. M. Thomas Ground. Tensions remain high.
CoTU submitted a memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen. It alleges state security forces and the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) are targeting Kuki-Zo leaders. They want the immediate release of Hengjang village chief and retired IDES officer K. Lhouvum, along with Ngamboi Haokip and Pagin Hangshing. All three were arrested on July 11 following unrest at Leimakhong.
The group claims the July 11 chaos stemmed from long-standing frustration over shortages of food, medicine, and basic vaccines in Kangpokpi. CoTU spokesperson Ng Lun argued that official inaction regarding supply blockades fueled the fire. He stated, "The government's approach favoured one community over another and said such measures would not contribute to lasting peace or a durable political solution."
Protesters also pointed to a June 30 demonstration at Gamgiphai where casualties occurred. They claim authorities ignored those responsible for the blockade while cracking down on Kuki leadership. Furthermore, CoTU condemned a midnight raid on July 12 at the home of Bongphajol village chief Douminlal Haokip. They allege CRPF CoBRA personnel conducted the search without a proper warrant or the presence of local police.
CoTU demanded that future operations follow strict legal protocols. They submitted copies of their grievance to the Security Advisor and the Director General of Police. The protest remained peaceful under heavy guard. Leaders continue to press the government for supply route access and the safety of the detainees.
