Imphal: The Working Committee of Kuki Civil Society Organisations in Ukhrul triggered a counter-economic blockade on National Highway-202 starting midnight on July 26. This move aims to force government action regarding the transport of essential commodities to Kuki-Zo territories. The group demands more than empty promises.
Residents across Ukhrul, Kamjong, and Kangpokpi districts face severe supply chain disruptions. The committee claims months of dialogue, meetings, and submitted memoranda failed to secure the passage of goods. They cite constant restrictions on Kuki-Zo people traveling through Naga-dominated foothill regions as the primary driver for this escalation. Government officials did not provide a meaningful response to previous complaints.
The organization stated: "The blockade had become necessary as the community could no longer remain silent after being denied access to essential supplies." All private and government institutions within the 14 Kuki-Zo villages under the committee's jurisdiction are now closed indefinitely.
Security forces, medical emergency transport, and airport-bound passengers retain clearance to pass through. Volunteers will inspect these exempted vehicles to prevent the smuggling of commercial items. The committee accused both the Manipur state government and the central authorities of showing bias against Kuki-Zo protesters compared to Meitei and Naga groups.
