Kohima: Kohima district officials gathered on June 15 to coordinate the launch of Census 2027, marking India's first attempt at a fully digital and paperless population count. Deputy Commissioner and Principal Census Officer B. Henok Buchem led the consultative sessions with Kohima Municipal Council members and various Angami community organizations to ensure a smooth administrative rollout.
The census process follows two distinct phases. A House Listing and Housing Census begins in June 2026, followed by Population Enumeration in February 2027. Citizens have the option to self-enumerate via an official portal between June 16 and June 30, 2026. This process generates a specific identification number for later verification by the 637 field functionaries tasked with house-to-house operations throughout the district.
Officials stressed that the exercise is strictly demographic and separate from issues involving taxation, land laws, or indigenous rights. B. Henok Buchem emphasized the necessity of accurate reporting at an individual's place of ordinary residence to prevent dual registration. He warned that a clean count is vital for the region, stating, "a clean count would help Kohima secure its rightful share of welfare schemes, healthcare, education and infrastructure."
Kohima Municipal Council chairperson Neibodzelie Solo and Angami Public Organisation president Thejao Vihienuo joined the call for public cooperation. They urged citizens to assist enumerators, verify official identities, and ensure proper house numbering. The administration also noted that the Census Act of 1948 mandates penalties for those who obstruct census work, provide false information, or tamper with official records.
