Kohima Officials Pledge Accuracy for Census 2027

Kohima: Kohima district administration has launched a collaborative effort to ensure the accuracy of the upcoming Census of India 2027. Officials met with representatives from the Angami Public Organisation, local women and youth groups, and municipal councillors to pledge a process free from political interference and artificial distortions.

Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem emphasized that the integrity of the data directly impacts the region's future. "An accurate count means Kohima gets its fair share of medical facilities, roads and educational institutions," he stated. The administration aims to strictly follow all government guidelines to ensure proper resource planning and welfare distribution.

The first phase, known as the house listing operation, begins on June 16. Citizens may choose to use a self-enumeration portal between June 16 and June 30, though all digital entries will still be verified by enumerators during doorstep visits. Field enumeration will continue from July 1 to July 31. A second phase focusing on population enumeration is scheduled for February 2027.

Addressing common public concerns, Buchem clarified that census data is collected strictly for demographic statistics. He reassured residents that registration does not affect land ownership or indigenous rights, and that individual information remains confidential. Providing false data is an offence under the Census Act of 1948, which can lead to legal prosecution.

The census will cover eight operational charges within the district, including Kohima Sadar, Chiephobozou, Sechu-Zubza, Jakhama, Botsa, and Kezocha. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with officials, verify identification, and ensure that individuals are not counted in two locations. Those staying away from home for more than six months will be enumerated at their current place of residence.
