Shillong: Leaders from major traditional organisations, including Seng Khasi Kmie, Sein Raij, Seng Khihlang, and Sengbah Ki Nongshat Nongkhein U Hynniewtrep, have called on their followers to adopt a uniform religious identity. During the 2027 Census and other official filings, adherents are encouraged to identify specifically as followers of Niam Khasi Niam Tre.
Seng Khasi Kmie vice-president P.D. Nongrum explained that this consensus decision aims to resolve issues where followers were previously misclassified as others or non-Christian. By providing a consistent label, the community hopes to secure accurate representation in national data. Nongrum noted that Indian government guidelines require census enumerators to record the specific religious identity provided by individuals during home visits.
Beyond the census, these organisations expressed frustration with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council regarding the protection of indigenous customs. Nongrum highlighted ongoing disputes in Hima Sohra and Hima Mylliem as evidence of a disregard for customary practices. He specifically cited the case of Marremdor Syiem, who remains without a sanad despite completing required traditional rites, and raised concerns regarding the suspension of the Syiem of Hima Mylliem.
