Shillong: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Executive Committee plans to raise the monthly salaries of its 72 casual employees to a flat rate of Rs 10,000. Many of these staff members currently earn between Rs 5,000 and Rs 7,000 per month, despite having worked for the council for periods ranging from five to over ten years.
Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh explained that the proposed increase aims to bring the council’s wage structure in line with the Minimum Wages Act while addressing concerns raised by the Labour Department. Regarding the decision, Lyngdoh stated, “Despite the council’s financial constraints, the Executive Committee felt it would be unfair to neglect the welfare of these workers.”
Seiborlang Warbah, the Executive Member in-charge of Finance, has been tasked with assessing the financial implications of this move. A formal report is expected next week, which will guide the council in finalizing the implementation of the pay hike. Lyngdoh indicated that the council intends to work toward meeting government-prescribed minimum wage norms if its financial standing improves in the future.
