Shillong: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council is providing financial relief to families affected by natural calamities, with payments ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 15,000 based on the severity of damage. Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh confirmed the funding structure during a session of the House on Friday.
Addressing concerns about processing times raised by Mairang-Nongkhlaw MDC Equator Nongrang, Lyngdoh explained that assistance depends on the council's available funds rather than a fixed government scale. He noted that most applications are processed within a year if families provide all necessary documentation, such as bank details and damage photographs. "Many eligible families remain unaware of the provision," Lyngdoh said while calling for improved public awareness regarding the scheme.
The council also released data on the distribution of these funds across various constituencies. Nongpoh leads the list with 21 recipients, followed by Umroi with nine and Mawhati with five. Smaller numbers of beneficiaries were reported in several other districts, including Mawphlang-Diengiei, Mawlai, and Mylliem.
In a separate update, Executive Member for Finance and Forest Seiborlang Warbah reported that the council oversees 48 sacred groves. The East Khasi Hills district contains the majority of these sites with 32, followed by West Khasi Hills with 13 and Ri-Bhoi with three.
