Kaziranga Honors Rhino Protection Force for Anti-Poaching Success

Guwahati: Kaziranga National Park honored its 82-member Special Rhino Protection Force on Saturday, August 8. The ceremony recognized the unit for its role in protecting the park's one-horned rhinoceros population from poachers. Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, and Keshab Mahanta attended the event.

Authorities deployed this specialized force in 2019 after rigorous training. The move followed a dark period for the park, which recorded 27 rhino killings in both 2013 and 2014. These staggering losses pushed officials to change tactics. The force now works with the Forest Department, Assam Police, and other agencies to secure the area. They focus on intelligence, surveillance, and enforcement.

The SRPF has become a key part of the park's security network. "The deployment of the SRPF marked a significant step towards strengthening dedicated protection for the greater one-horned rhinoceros, a flagship species of Kaziranga." By patrolling vulnerable spots, the group maintains constant vigilance against wildlife crime.
