Shillong: James P.K. Sangma has confirmed he will remain president of the Meghalaya Cricket Association following his nomination for the Rajya Sabha. Speaking after he filed his papers on Monday, Sangma stated that current legal frameworks permit elected representatives to serve in leadership roles for sports organizations, provided they are not ministers or government servants.
Addressing internal challenges, Sangma acknowledged that staff members have gone without pay for six months. He characterized these financial difficulties as long-standing legacy issues and assured the public that the association is working to resolve them. Regarding the lack of an Internal Complaints Committee under the POSH framework, he noted that the group is waiting on a report from the Meghalaya State Commission for Women before taking action.
Sangma emphasized that improving the association's governance remains a primary objective. Since taking office in January, he has focused on filling vacant administrative roles, such as the appointment of an ombudsman who had been absent for two years. He told reporters, "Addressing institutional gaps within the association remained a priority and assured that necessary measures would be taken to strengthen its governance structure."
