Shillong: Former legislator James P K Sangma officially filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha on June 8. Representing the National People's Party, Sangma submitted his paperwork to Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma with the unified support of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma joined the candidate alongside cabinet ministers and representatives from coalition partners, including the United Democratic Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Hill State People's Democratic Party. Sangma emerged as the consensus candidate following extensive consultations among alliance members.
After filing his nomination, Sangma expressed his readiness to address long-standing state concerns. He noted that his primary goal is to ensure that "the voice of Meghalaya is heard" while serving in the Upper House.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma emphasized that the new representative will serve as a vital link between the state and the central government. The administration expects the incoming member to advocate for critical priorities, such as the implementation of the Inner Line Permit, the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, and addressing matters related to the Sixth Schedule and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act.
