Kohima: The College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry in Jalukie launched the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, or Save the Farm Campaign, on June 3 at Old Jalukie in the Peren district. This initiative aligns with the national campaign started by the Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on June 1. The event was held in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra Peren and the District Agriculture Department.
Dr. I. Shakuntala, Dean of the college, stressed the importance of restoring soil health and improving farmer profits. She advocated for sustainable farming methods and the use of fertilizers based on specific soil test results to create a more self-reliant agricultural community.
Experts at the event provided practical advice for local cultivators. Farm Manager Helingpung explained how to prepare vermicompost and detailed the benefits of using Azolla as both a bio-fertilizer and a protein supplement. Meanwhile, Dr. L. Babita Devi from KVK Peren encouraged farmers to view ecologically sound practices as a necessary long-term investment for rural prosperity.
Representatives from the Nagaland Department of Soil and Water Conservation, Esther and Koko, guided attendees on the use of Soil Health Cards. These tools help farmers understand their soil nutrient profiles to apply fertilizers more efficiently. The campaign will continue with daily outreach programs across villages in the Peren district over the coming weeks as part of a broader effort to empower local farmers.
