Jaintia Students Movement Opposes Using Teachers for Census 2027

Shillong: The Jaintia Students Movement (JSM), Western Region, has formally requested that school teachers be exempted from conducting the Census 2027. In a representation submitted to the Chief Executive Officer and Charge Census Officer of the Jowai Municipal Board, the organization argued that assigning non-academic tasks to educators creates unnecessary stress and disrupts the classroom environment.

While the group acknowledges the national importance of the census, it stressed that teaching is a primary responsibility that should not be compromised. The JSM suggested that the government look toward other local resources to staff the operation, pointing to staff from local authorities, Village Councils, Dorbar Shnong members, and local volunteers as ideal alternatives. The organization stated that such an approach would ensure smooth conduct of the census while promoting greater community ownership.

The JSM expressed hope that the government will prioritize the education system during the planning of the exercise. The group emphasized that these changes were requested "in the larger interest of students, the education system, and the successful implementation of Census 2027."
