Shillong: The Jaintia Coal Owners, Miners, Suppliers and Workers Association announced an indefinite sit-in demonstration beginning June 1 to protest the state government's failure to restart coal mining. Association president Marshall SB Biam said residents have struggled for 12 years due to the ongoing impasse.
Biam accused the government of lacking the political will to create a functional regulatory system. He emphasized that private land ownership rights must be respected under the Sixth Schedule. The association contends that current government requirements, specifically a Standard Operating Procedure mandating 100 hectares of land for mining, are unrealistic for local owners who typically hold only three to four acres.
The group also challenged the state for allowing coal imports from other regions while local producers remain sidelined. They are demanding that local supply be prioritized for industrial units within Meghalaya. Additionally, Biam urged the Autonomous District Councils to pass legislation that secures landowner rights over mineral resources like limestone.
The protest is scheduled to take place in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. Biam requested public support for the demonstration to pressure the government into implementing practical and lawful solutions for small-scale miners.
