Itanagar: More than 200 people pounded the pavement in Itanagar this Saturday. They gathered at Indira Gandhi Park for a Kargil Vijay Diwas Rain Run. The event honored soldiers who died during the 1999 conflict with Pakistan. Students from local schools and colleges joined Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel for the race.
Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister Mama Natung and Sports Minister Kento Jini flagged off the runners. The competition included 2 km, 5 km, and 10 km categories. Natung stated the day honors the sacrifice of India's armed forces. Athlete Joti Mane said, "such events help reinforce patriotism and recognise the contribution of the country's soldiers."
India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas every July 26. The date commemorates the successful recapture of strategic positions in the Kargil sector after the 1999 intrusions.
