Itanagar: The District Magistrate of the Itanagar Capital Region, Toko Babu, has officially declared a 24-hour bandh called by the Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organization (APIYO) as illegal and unlawful. He has directed the organization to withdraw the protest immediately. The bandh was scheduled to run from 5:00 AM on June 5 to 5:00 AM on June 6.
APIYO President Taro Sonam Liyak had announced the shutdown to protest unresolved issues concerning alleged illegal immigrants and unauthorized mosques in the region. However, the administration stated that official action regarding these concerns is already underway. Specifically, the Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate of Itanagar issued sealing notices to several alleged illegal mosques and Jama Masjids on May 28.
In his official order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Toko Babu cited the Supreme Court judgment in the case of CPI (M) versus Bharat Kumar and Others. The order noted that "bandh calls by political parties, organisations, associations, groups, or individuals are unconstitutional and illegal."
The administration warned that such shutdowns disrupt essential public services and threaten law and order. Officials emphasized that these protests negatively affect daily wage earners, local businesses, and patients while infringing upon the fundamental right to livelihood protected by Article 21 of the Constitution. The District Magistrate has instructed Taro Sonam Liyak to refrain from enforcing the strike to avoid further economic losses and public disorder.
