Guwahati: A 48-year-old female elephant named Maniki left Assam for a specialized medical facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat. State authorities approved the transfer to Vantara after years of health battles and public pressure. The elephant suffered from a deformed left foreleg, vision loss, and chronic dehydration.

Video footage of Maniki limping along a highway went viral last August. Public outrage followed. She reportedly collapsed near the Makum Bypass after being walked for kilometers. Her condition was the result of a long-term injury involving a heavy log from her time in Arunachal Pradesh.

The move to Vantara has sparked debate. Activists want better animal rehabilitation facilities built within Assam. They argue that elephants should not be moved long distances. Supporters say Maniki needs care that is not available locally. The elephant's owner, Ruchi Chetia, requested the move to ensure her survival.

Vantara officials have begun a rigorous treatment plan for the animal. A spokesperson said, "Maniki’s health report indicates that she requires comprehensive veterinary attention in a protected and specialised care environment." The team plans to use hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and pain management to help her recover. She remains under close supervision.
