Itanagar: The Indian Army successfully defused a live mortar shell dating back to the 1962 India-China war in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The unexploded ordnance was discovered on Thursday afternoon in the Lebrang area of Tawang township, prompting local authorities to secure the site immediately.
Tawang Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang confirmed that police personnel cordoned off the area to protect the public after receiving a report from sub-inspector Lham Thinley. "The information about the live mortar shell was received from sub-inspector Lham Thinley of Tawang Police Station. The Indian Army was informed without delay, and police personnel cordoned off the area to prevent any threat to public safety," Darang said.
Army bomb disposal experts carefully transported the device to the isolated Methang area, where it was neutralized on Friday. The operation was conducted under the supervision of senior officers, including 190 Mountain Brigade Commander Brigadier Bhupal Singh, Colonel N Vasantharaj, and Major Mohammad Akhlas. No injuries or property damage occurred during the disposal.
Superintendent Darang commended the 190 Mountain Brigade for their professional handling of the situation. While historical ammunition is occasionally found in the region, officials warned that these items remain highly dangerous. Local authorities have urged all residents to report any suspicious objects to the police immediately rather than attempting to handle them.
