Illegal liquor shops plague Dibrugarh school zone

Guwahati: Three liquor shops are running illegally right against the boundary wall of New Amolapatty Girls Primary School in Dibrugarh, Assam. The outlets sit in a high-traffic area. They operate near a historic Hanuman temple, a mosque, a second temple, and a local dargah. The trade continues despite the proximity to children.

These shops sell both country-made and Indian-made foreign liquor. They stay open from early morning until deep into the night. One spot hides behind the front of a paan shop. A blue curtain guards the entrance to the illicit bar. The layout includes tables, chairs, and snacks. Customers drink on-site. People can buy various quantities of booze right at the counter.

Locals say the setup creates serious law-and-order headaches. Officials have remained silent. Police officers and Excise Department staff pass the site constantly. Yet, the shops stay open. One source noted the situation clearly: "The alleged operation has raised questions about enforcement, particularly given its proximity to a primary school." The community demands action against the long-standing violation.
