Guwahati: Ritesh Raj Singh, a third-year Computer Science and Engineering student at IIT Guwahati, died Sunday after falling from the fifth floor of an academic building. The incident occurred at 2:30 pm. Medical staff declared him dead shortly after the fall. Police have launched an investigation into the case, which is currently being treated as a suspected suicide.
Singh lived in the Brahmaputra Hostel. He was a bright student with a strong academic track record who had recently earned an internship at Goldman Sachs. His death marks the first suspected student suicide at the campus in 2026, following four similar incidents in 2024.
IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal addressed the community regarding the tragedy. “It is with deep sorrow that I inform you of the untimely demise of Ritesh Raj Singh, a third-year BTech student from the Computer Science and Engineering department and a resident of Brahmaputra Hostel. This is a profound loss to our IITG family. The Institute is in close contact with his family and is providing all necessary support during this difficult time,” Jalihal said.
The institute is cooperating with the police investigation. They are currently waiting for the official post-mortem results. Officials asked the public to avoid speculation until authorities confirm the facts.
The school maintains several mental health resources. These include the SAATHI Counselling Club and the Centre for Holistic Wellbeing. The campus employs four full-time counsellors. All students undergo mandatory counselling sessions to identify emotional distress. The institute also runs a Peer Mentorship Programme and ice-breaking sessions for new students. Staff urged anyone struggling to reach out for help immediately.
