IIT Guwahati Researchers Create Cheap Device for Bacterial Detection

Guwahati: Researchers at IIT Guwahati built a low-cost, handheld tool to spot bacteria in seconds. It skips the slow, traditional culture process used in standard labs. This innovation promises to change how we monitor healthcare and environmental safety.

The team behind the project includes professors Parameswar K Iyer and Siddhartha S Ghosh. Former PhD scholars Anamika Dey, Ashish Singh, and Deepanjalee Dutta also contributed to the work. They built the device around an Organic Field Effect Transistor. This tech detects bacteria and tells the difference between Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. It works fast.

The research is already patented. It appeared in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A, a publication from the Royal Society of Chemistry. The team noted the potential impact: "The innovation has the potential to make bacterial detection faster, more accessible and efficient."

Beyond basic checkups, the device has wide applications. Officials could use it for environmental monitoring or anti-bioterrorism measures. Assam is proving its growing weight in global scientific research.
