Shillong: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is bringing in experts from IIT Guwahati to fight the Brahmaputra River. The state wants a permanent, scientific strategy to stop land loss. Erosion destroys homes and vital infrastructure every year. It remains a major development headache.
Sarma surveyed sites in Dibrugarh district on Monday. He visited Chabua, Balijan, Pukhurijan, Dinjan, and Rahmoria. He met families who lost land as the river shifted course. Government teams currently work on mitigation, but the Chief Minister wants more.
"We will soon hold a meeting with experts from IIT-Guwahati to identify a permanent and scientific solution to the recurring erosion problem. Our teams are already working on mitigation measures, but we need a long-term strategy backed by modern technology and research," Sarma said. He promised to ditch temporary fixes for advanced engineering.
This partnership backs a current 90-crore rupee project. That work focuses on strengthening riverbanks and saving farm soil. The government plans to use this research to protect communities throughout the monsoon season.
