Kohima: The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region in Nagaland hosted a state-level meeting on June 12 to address fertilizer consumption and develop new strategies for sustainable agricultural practices. The event brought together government officials, scientists, and academic leaders to discuss improving nutrient use efficiency and long-term soil health.
Dr. H. Kalita, head of the regional center, opened the session by stressing the necessity of balanced nutrient management. He advocated for an Integrated Nutrient Management approach that combines chemical fertilizers with organic manures and bio-fertilizers. He noted that the goal is to foster greater collaboration among research institutions, government departments, and farmers to protect the environment while maintaining productivity.
Agriculture Director Sanuzo Neinu emphasized that science-based interventions and increased farmer awareness are essential for state-wide sustainability. A central feature of the meeting was the unveiling of a draft action plan presented by Dr. Lahar J. Bordoloi. The roadmap proposes soil test-based applications, the adoption of natural farming, and the use of precision technologies to reduce dependency on excessive chemical inputs.
Experts also highlighted the role of livestock in creating more resilient farming ecosystems. Dr. Girish Patel and Dr. I. Shakuntala Devi both spoke on the potential of animal husbandry to support soil fertility through nutrient recycling. During the discussion, attendees shared recommendations for implementing these changes, with Dr. I. Shakuntala Devi stating, "The importance of strengthening crop-livestock integration and promoting organic nutrient sources derived from animal husbandry systems" remains a priority for the region.
