Kohima: The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, recently hosted a training programme for 46 farmers in Chümoukedima village. The session focused on quality seed production for rice to help local growers improve agricultural productivity and adopt modern scientific farming practices.
Dr. H. Kalita, head of the ICAR Nagaland Centre, emphasized that high-quality seeds are essential for strengthening food security and improving livelihoods across the state. He urged participants to move toward more sustainable farming methods to achieve better long-term crop performance.
During the technical training, scientist Dr. Harendra Verma introduced seven new rice breeding lines specifically designed for Nagaland. These varieties could potentially double the yield compared to traditional crops if managed correctly. Dr. Verma provided detailed instruction on essential processes including seed treatment, nutrient management, pest control, and proper storage.
To ensure the information was accessible, Dr. Moatoshi Jamir from the PBG division conducted interactive discussions in the local dialect. As part of the initiative to support the transition to modern agriculture, the ICAR team also distributed improved rice seeds to all participants.
