Shillong: The Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) faces internal instability after the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) declined to endorse the United Democratic Party's (UDP) candidate for the Shillong parliamentary seat. The move comes just one day after the UDP officially unveiled senior lawyer Vivan GK Kynta as its nominee.
Historically, the two parties have aligned their support to secure the Khasi-Jaintia vote. However, the HSPDP's recent hesitation signals a growing rift within the coalition. HSPDP general secretary P Ryntathiang stated that the party is still conducting internal deliberations and has not reached a final decision regarding their support for Kynta.
While Ryntathiang confirmed the HSPDP remains committed to the RDA, he did not rule out the possibility of the party fielding its own independent candidate. A formal clarification from the HSPDP is expected next week.
This lack of consensus poses a strategic risk for the alliance. In a competitive race for the Shillong seat, any failure to unify the regional vote could inadvertently benefit rivals from the National People's Party and the Congress.
