HSPDP Proposes Monument for Late Leader Hopingstone Lyngdoh

Shillong: The youth wing of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party in West Khasi Hills has formally requested the local Deputy Commissioner to install a statue honoring the late Hopingstone Lyngdoh in Nongstoin. The proposal, submitted on June 5, seeks to commemorate the former MLA and veteran statehood movement leader for his decades of public service. Lyngdoh served as a legislator for 43 years, held the position of Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council for 27 years, and also served as an MP and Deputy Chief Minister.

Party members suggest placing the monument at a major town junction or park to serve as a landmark. They believe the statue will preserve Lyngdoh’s legacy and inspire future generations regarding the state’s political history.

In a separate development, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has called for the safe release of six Naga civilians currently held in Manipur. This appeal follows the recent release of 14 Kuki civilians in Senapati district, an action Sangma praised as a vital step toward regional stability. He commended the efforts of the United Naga Council and other civil society groups for their humanitarian decision. The Chief Minister stated, "The gesture offers hope and demonstrates that humanity must prevail over conflict." He encouraged Kuki community leaders to reciprocate the action to foster long-term peace.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya unit of the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Foundation recently hosted various student competitions at the RB Anupchand Hindi Secondary School in Shillong. The event featured activities ranging from model making and craft to essay writing and poetry. State president Falguni Chakraborty encouraged students to pursue excellence, while special guest Ram Shakal Sahani commended the foundation for its focus on inclusive education for children with disabilities.
