Kohima: Hornbill TV journalist Imnatula Jamir visited Patkai Christian College on August 11 to train students on the realities of broadcast reporting. The workshop, titled Mastering On-Camera Reporting: Presentation Skills for Broadcast Journalists, focused on building confidence. Jamir urged students to change their mindset during live broadcasts. "Imagine speaking to one person rather than thousands of viewers," she said. This trick helps presenters stay natural and calm.
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication hosted the event. Jamir walked the group through the technical side of the job. She explained how to use eye-level, close-up, medium, and wide shots. Medium shots work best for anchoring and live reporting. Wide shots provide context for events like rallies, fires, or accidents. She told students to keep their bodies relaxed. She warned against fidgeting, touching the face, or playing with microphones.
Eye contact remains a primary tool. Reporters must look directly into the lens to mimic the viewer's gaze. Facial expressions should always match the gravity of the story. She also covered the technical delivery of news. Reporters should control their pitch, pace, and pauses to help the audience process facts. Nzanrhoni Humtsoe opened the day, and Therali R Kithan closed it with a vote of thanks. Students gained hands-on experience in interviewing and live reporting techniques.
