Shillong: Rabiul Islam died Saturday at 4.30 am inside Guwahati's Apollo International Hospital. He was 70. Doctors confirmed the cause of death as respiratory failure following a bout of pneumonia. The son of the late Azizul Islam, he was born October 29, 1956, and hailed from Dhubri.
Islam carved out a long career in journalism across Meghalaya and Assam. He served as Chief Sub-Editor at The Shillong Times, earning respect for his professional focus and warm demeanor. Colleagues described him as a "gentle, generous and multi-talented person" who left a mark through his various pursuits.
Beyond the newsroom, Islam focused on social work and rehabilitation. He worked with the Kripa Foundation in Shillong before opening Ashray, his own rehabilitation center in Dhubri. He spent years helping people fight addiction and reclaim their lives. He was also an accomplished musician who played guitar and sang for audiences in Shillong and Guwahati.
Islam is survived by his two sons and one daughter, Raisha Aziz. Mourners gathered for his burial Saturday evening at the Athgaon Kabarastan in Guwahati. His death hits hard in Shillong, Guwahati, and Dhubri, where he remained a beloved figure.
