Shillong: HITO submitted a proposal to the Meghalaya government. They want to label August 17 as a day of historical and constitutional significance. This date marks the 1948 anniversary when Governor-General C. Rajagopalachari signed the conditional Instrument of Accession and the Annexed Agreement with 25 Khasi States. It was a unique deal. Unlike 565 other princely states that signed the Instrument of Merger, the Khasi States insisted on an arrangement to protect their traditional customs, rights, and identity.
The group wants the younger generation to learn about the state's political evolution. This includes the Dorbar Hima and Dorbar Shnong institutions. The proposal demands more research into the 1948 agreement and a stronger focus on indigenous practices. According to the document, the move would ensure that "future generations understand the distinct historical journey through which the Khasi States joined the Indian Union."
HITO suggested hosting seminars, public lectures, and document exhibitions to mark the date. The organizers expect to reach across state, district, and local levels. The representation urges the Governor to consult with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to secure formal recognition. This would open doors for dialogue regarding the specific historical conditions of the Northeast.
