Guwahati: Performers in Maj Jalbhari village staged the 200-year-old Khora Baruah Bhaona on Friday. The event took place during Janmashtami night in the Dhakuakhana sub-district of Lakhimpur. It was a rare look at history. The actors at the 14 Prasangia Mahapurushia Naamghar abandoned traditional mythological costumes. They used banana leaves for coverings instead.
This performance relies on a specific rhythm of musical beats and coordinated movements. It represents the middle portion of the Krishna Janma Yatra, a play written by Sri Sri Gopal Ata. He was a disciple of the 16th-century Vaishnavite saint Sri Sri Madhavdeva. The 14 Prasangia Mahapurushia Naamghar has protected this unique tradition since it opened in 1830. Organizers confirmed the site "has preserved and staged the tradition since its foundation in 1830."
