Guwahati: Guwahati Police busted a car theft ring and arrested six men tied to a plot to sell a stolen rental vehicle in Nagaland. The operation started after owner Ruprekha Das reported her car missing on July 27.
Das rented the vehicle, registration AS-01-GN-2716, to Nabajyoti Medhi for two days. He never returned it. Das tracked the car via GPS toward Mariani and tipped off the Hatigaon Police. The cops jumped on the lead.
Officers from Hatigaon, Titabor, and Mariani coordinated a sting operation. They recovered the stolen car and seized two support vehicles: a Bolero Pickup, AS-22-AC-0643, and a Mahindra Thar, AR-01P-3745. The ring planned to sell the car outside Assam. Police confirmed, "All six accused have been arrested and are being produced before a court with a prayer for police remand."
The suspects include Abhinash Saikia, Bikash Das, Kaustav Jyoti Saikia, and Bhaskar Barua, all from Golaghat. Officers also picked up Mariani residents Prandip Baruah and Anurag Choudhary. Hatigaon Police charged the group under Sections 316(2), 318(4), 319(2), and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The investigation rolls on.
