Imphal: Fourteen civil society organizations and community groups are calling for justice following the death of Manipuri guitarist Chongtham Vikram. Assailants attacked Vikram in South Delhi during the early hours of September 6. He died shortly after the beating. The killing has sparked outrage across Manipur.
Groups including Kangleipak, the Kabui Union Manipur, Manipur Meitei Tribal Union, and AMMOCOC condemned the assault. The Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation Manipur, Meitei Leepun, KOM Union Manipur, Mao Union Imphal, Indigenous Peoples' Forum Manipur, Manipur Naga Youth Organization, Thoudou Inpi Manipur, and Manipur IMA IDP also joined the chorus of condemnation. They claim this is not an isolated event. It is a pattern of violence targeting people from the Northeast.
The organizations issued a joint statement regarding the tragedy. They warned that these repeated instances of violence and discrimination cannot be ignored. The coalition urged the Manipur government to pressure the Central government for better safety protocols. They want effective measures to protect Manipuris living outside the state. Authorities must take stronger action against racial attacks. The groups shared their grief with the bereaved family and demanded a swift investigation to ensure justice in Vikram's case.
