Shillong: Delhi police arrested seven people following the killing of Manipuri musician Vikram Chongtham. The suspects, aged between 15 and 36, reportedly beat Chongtham to death outside his apartment. He had stepped outside late at night to confront a group of men drinking and causing a public nuisance.
Friends and colleagues are demanding a full, impartial investigation. Comedian Keith Wallang, who knew the victim well, expressed the collective shock of the Northeast community. “Anyone who knows Vikram will tell you he’s a real gentleman,” Wallang stated in a social media post.
Musician Rudy Wallang, a friend since the 1980s, called for the harshest possible penalties for the attackers. He noted the loss of a talented artist and a kind person. IPS officer Robin Hibu has intervened to ensure transparency. Hibu contacted the DCP of Southeast Delhi and the Joint Commissioner of Police, Southern Range, to push for a fair case. He also requested that the SHO of Sunlight Colony maintain open communication with the victim’s wife and son.
Supreme Court advocate Daniel Stone Lyngdoh joined the calls for justice. He argued that citizens from the Northeast deserve equal protection under the law. While the seven arrests have brought temporary relief, the public remains focused on the legal proceedings. The age of the youngest suspect, a 15-year-old, means the court process will face additional scrutiny as it moves forward.
