Ground cracks trigger panic in Assam’s Jharna Basti

Guwahati: Panic has gripped Jharna Basti as deep cracks tear through houses and roads. The situation in this Margherita circle village worsens every day. Nearly 50 families now face the threat of their homes collapsing.

Locals blame the destruction on coal dumping by North Eastern Coalfields, a division of Coal India Ltd. They claim NEC-CIL authorities inspected the site but failed to act. The ground continues to shift under their feet.

Youth leader Rahul Chetry led the neighborhood in submitting a formal memorandum to the Margherita Co-District administration this Wednesday. They demand an immediate safety assessment and repairs. Chetry issued a sharp warning to officials. If the administration ignores these residents, they will launch mass protests. Chetry stated, "If the administration fails to take effective steps to address the issue, the affected residents will launch strong protest programmes with public participation."
