Itanagar: The Galo Youth Organisation kicked off a 12-hour bandh in Arunachal Pradesh’s Leparada district at 5 am Sunday. The shutdown is scheduled to run until 5 pm. It persists despite a direct order from the District Magistrate prohibiting enforcement of the protest.
Volunteers flooded the streets early, blocking strategic points with burning tires and boulders. Tensions stem from ongoing disputes between the Galo Welfare Society and the Galo Luvv Baany Keba. The administration pushed for a round-table talk to settle the matter.
On September 5, officials issued an order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The directive warned that attempts to obstruct public order, safety, or essential services are strictly off-limits. The order states: "The administration said people must be able to travel, report to work, attend educational institutions, seek medical care, buy essential goods and carry out other lawful activities without obstruction."
Security forces now patrol key locations to prevent escalation. While the local government banned blocking roads and forcing businesses to close, they allowed for peaceful expression. The Superintendent of Police must now use lawful measures to keep order. No violent incidents have surfaced yet, but officials remain on high alert.
