Former Tripura militants threaten indefinite blockade over broken promises

Agartala: Surrendered militants in Tripura are preparing for a massive showdown. Starting June 24, two groups will launch an indefinite blockade of all rail and road traffic across the state. They claim the government broke its word.

The Joint Action Rehabilitation Committee and the Joint Action Committee lead this charge. They represent roughly 15,000 former insurgents who gave up arms since 1978. These men expected jobs and support. They got nothing. Many still live in poverty and face active criminal cases despite their return to civilian life.

JARC-JAC convener Jibanjoy Reang addressed the situation clearly. "We surrendered to lead a normal life, but even after more than three decades, many of our members have not been rehabilitated. Pending cases against many cadres have also not been withdrawn," he said.

The groups handed a nine-point demand list to Chief Minister Manik Saha. They gave him one week to act. Previous pleas to Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma went nowhere. With no real movement from the state, the groups are doubling down. Unless the government meets these demands immediately, the state faces total transportation paralysis.
