Shillong: Former Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla has formally rejected open-cast mining as a solution for coal extraction in the East Jaintia Hills. Speaking to the media on Monday, Shylla argued that the specific geographical layout and unique mining conditions of the region render open-cast methods impractical, even if they might function elsewhere in Meghalaya.
Shylla is currently finalizing a proposal to present to the Chief Minister. He noted that the suggested model deviates from both the traditional rat-hole mining system and the open-cast approach. "This proposed model, he clarified, would differ from both the traditional rat-hole mining system and open-cast mining," Shylla said while discussing the new strategy.
The state government will review the proposal once submitted. If officials deem the plan viable, they intend to forward it to the Central Government to seek final authorization. Shylla expressed hope that this method will provide a sustainable path forward that balances economic requirements with essential safety and environmental safeguards.
